The Failure Happens Under the Desktop
A clamp does not simply grab a slab of a stated thickness. Its upper pad needs a stable contact area. Its lower pad and screw need a flat, reachable landing area below. The jaw must open far enough for the desktop, but it must also close without landing partly on an apron, rail, bracket, or cable tray.

Three Desks That Look Compatible in a Product Photo
Case A: The top is thick, but the underside is not flat
A buyer checks the listed monitor arm desk thickness range and confirms that the desktop falls inside it. The number appears correct. Under the rear edge, however, a support rail begins so close to the edge that the lower clamp pad would sit partly on the rail and partly on the desktop.
Do not treat a tilted pad as "close enough." The clamp was designed to bear on defined surfaces. Inspect the opening before approving it. If it contains power components, ask the supplier or a qualified installer for the internal layout rather than disassembling the module yourself. Confirm that the desk manufacturer allows the opening to carry a monitor mount and that the arm's plates can seat flat. Never drill into a power box or route a mounting bolt through an electrical enclosure.
Case C: The clamp fits, but the arm cannot swing
The installer secures a C-clamp monitor arm desk setup and mounts the screen. At the seated position, everything looks correct. When the user pulls the display closer or rotates it for a visitor, the rear joint hits the wall. At full height, the cable becomes taut. On a benching station, the arm may cross into the neighboring employee's space.
This is a movement failure, not a clamp failure. Test the complete route of the arm with the monitor attached, cables connected, and adjacent seats occupied. The intended daily positions matter more than the most compact position shown in a product image.

Work Backward From Where the Screen Must Land
Start with the person, not the back edge. Mark the chair centerline, keyboard position, usual screen distance, and any second viewing position used for collaboration. For two monitors, mark the inside edges as well as the combined span. Only then choose the base location.
The base does not necessarily belong directly behind the screen. Depending on the arm's joint layout, an offset clamp may place the display more accurately and keep the joints away from a wall or divider. For a dual arm, check the permitted load per screen and the manufacturer's setup rules; do not divide a combined rating by two unless the documentation explicitly says to do so.
Desk side. Match the selected clamp or grommet hardware to the desk's real geometry: desktop material and construction, permitted thickness, flat upper and lower contact zones, underside access, nearby electrical parts, and available movement space. Do not assume a reinforcement plate makes glass, stone, hollow-core material, or an unverified composite panel suitable. The desktop and arm manufacturers must specify an acceptable mounting method for that exact combination.
A light monitor does not rescue a bad clamp point. A strong desk edge does not rescue an undersized arm.

Finding an obstruction does not always mean replacing the desk. It does mean stopping before drilling or forcing the supplied clamp.
